Kulve Taroth Availability

The Kulve Taroth is available only occasionally, and is always available during seasonal events like the Spring Blossom or Summer Festival.

How to Unlock the Kulve Taroth Siege Quest

Before you can take on Kulve Taroth, you need to meet these conditions:

  1. Complete the main campaign / reach Hunter Rank 16
  2. Gather Kulve Taroth's Golden Scales in Optional Quests and Expeditions.

You can find a Golden Scale easily at the Ancient Forest. Start in the Southwest Camp (1) and go to the main, big, open area right outside. A scale is on a ledge there.

  1. The Admiral will approach you when you reutn.
  2. The Special Investigation - Banquet in the Earthen Hall - will only be available to accept in the Gathering Hub. You must have retrieved a scale in order to join a Siege.

How the Kulve Taroth Siege Works

  • The Kulve Taroth Siege is a Special Investigation that can only be accepted in the Gathering Hub.
  • Four groups of four hunters in the same Gathering Hub session will essentially be attacking the same instance of Kulve Taroth.
  • You can all start at separate times. You will share the progression.
  • Though 16 players is not required, the difficulty is scaled for 16 pleayers, and it will be more difficult to complete the goal and gain rewards with less.
  • SOS Flares will not work in the Kulve Taroth Siege.

Don't have 16 people to play with? Do the following:
- Search for an Online Session
- Filter so that Kulve Taroth is the target
- You'll join a room full of like-minded hunters all doing the Siege! You can invite your friends to a room once you're there as well.

Once youhave completed the Kulve Taroth Siege, you will receive additional special rewards from the Hub Lass, even before all teams have completed it.

  • The main goal is to break Kulve Taroth's horns entirely before it leaves the area - that will end the Siege, marked as a success.
  • You cannot kill the Kulve Taroth.
  • There isa point system related to specific goals. The more points acquired, the more luxurious the rewards.
  • These goals are mainly breaking parts, but will only be revealed in yourlist once it has been discovered in the field. See the Kulve Taroth Objective List
  • These goals are shared. For example, if a different team of four in your online session breaks the tail, you will see a notification of it on your screen, and get partial points for it. You must break it yourself to get full points.
  • If everyone in the session earned full points, everyone will get better rewards.
  • Progress (damage, points accumulated, etc.) against a Kulve Taroth will roll over into the next Special Investigation and remain until you have defeated it (by breaking off the horns completely), or it gets away.
  • You can defeat Kulve Taroth in one round, or it can take up to six.
  • Once you have defeated the Kulve Taroth, your progress on the next Special Investigation will reset, scoutflies and all.

Kulve Taroth Objective List

These are the objectives you'll need to meet to gain poinst. If a team of four in the same session of you meets these objectives but you don't, you will receive between 20% and 30% of the points. For example, if another team completed Tail Right Gold Plating Broken, you will see a friend symbol next to that objective in the list and receive 10/30 points. If you also complete it, you will only earn your 30 points. They do not stack.

Make sure to check these in between rounds to know what to focus on next.

Kulve Taroth Siege Tips

Here are a few tips to get through the siege.

Bring the Appropriate Equipment

Kulve Taroth spits out fire down the line, and there are also plenty of lava hazards. Make sure your Fire Resistance is decent.

  • Mantle and Hunter Tools Recommendation: Vitality Mantle and Fireproof Mantle, Health Booster or Rocksteady if you don't have the first suggestions, or prefer to support friends with the booster.
  • Armor Skills Recommendation: - Partbreaker, as the objectives require breaking parts.
  • Item Recommendation: The usual List of Items You Should Bring On Quests with plenty of materials to make Mega Barrel Bombs, plus Cool Drinks to deal with Area 3. Traps and Flash Pods will not work. Bring materials to craft ammo / coatings if you're a gunner / bowman.
  • Felyne Skills:If available, definitely try to activate Felyne Insurance or Felyne Moxie with your meal.

The Supply Box in the beginning gives you a Farcaster. Don't forget it! It's useful if you need to return fast to restock, and can also be used as a panic button to escape if needed.

Set your Radial Menu

Especially if you're using a long range weapon, add the crafting to your radial menu so you can craft quickly on the go. For example, crafting ammo, bombs, and even life powders can be added to the radial menu for easy access.

Explosions May Be the Best Way to Go

Kulve Taroth is covered in armor for much of the fight with very few weak points, but it seems explosions from Barrel Bombs, Sticky Ammo, Cluster Bombs, and even the Gunlance's explosions, ignore that armor and do extra damage.

Pick up All The Things

Kulve Taroth constantly drops items. The Gajalakas will steal them (!) and the endemic beetles will scurry away with them. Pick them up quickly.

Additionally, picking up tracks (as well as breaking parts) will increase the Pursuit Level, which increases the time the Kulve Taroth will remain in the area. So make sure to pick up tracks!

Focus on Different Body Parts

Yes, the main goal is to break the queen's horns, but you'll earn points by completing certain objectives. Once you return from your first run (if you didn't obliterate the horns on your first go), check the Objective List for what else you still need to do to get maximum points, and in turn, maximum rewards.

Mount as Much as You Can

Mounting the Kulve Taroth will knock her down, giving everyone an opportunity to wail on her horns. Additionally, the more you mount her, the more likely she will become enraged - softening her golden coat, making most of her body a weak point.

Consider Switching Weapons

When Kulve Taroth is covered in gold, it's weakest to Thunder and resistant to Ice, but when it loses its mantle, it's weakest to Ice and resistant to Thunder and Fire.

Dragon will do one-star damage when covered in gold, but two-star damage when not.

Water is the only consistent element against her, retaining a two-star effectiveness against her throughout.

See the Kulve Taroth for more information on its weaknesses.

Try These Weapons

Lance: The lance's dash allows you to do constant damage to Kulve Taroth - seriously, you can inflict dozens of ticks of damage in seconds. Plus, when paired with Uragaan's Protection, you can Guard through even Taroth's brutal AOE lava breath that covers the floor. Recommended Armor Skills for Lance:

  • Guard - Massively reduces stamina and recoil from guarding attacks.
  • Uragaan's Protection - To guard against attacks otherwise un-guardable.
  • Protective Polish - To maintain sharpness, which will go down with every tick of damage without it.
    • Handicraft / Speed Sharpening - If you don't have a Protective Polish jewel.
  • Partbreaker - To mess up those parts!
  • Defensive: Fire Resistance, Health Boost
  • Offensive: Marathon Runner - to increase the time you can dash into her.

Light Bow Gun: The Light Bow Gun is phenomenal at doing constant, consistent damage to specific parts of Kulve Taroth. Pick a gun that can use Sticky and Slicing Ammo with lower recoil, for use on the horns, and a rapid-fire option for Thunder (when she's covered in gold) or Ice (when undressed). She can be afflicted by status as well, so Light Bow Gun can offer great support! Recovery Ammo can be a (literal) life saver for teammates as well. Recommended Armor Skills for LBG:

  • Evade Extender - Getting hit by her line attack is not fun, and this will save you from getting caught in the middle of her AOE breath attack with the increased mobility.
  • Evade Window - Offers more frames of invincibility. Dying isn't fun.
  • Xeno'jiva's Blessing - This grants you the chance of not expending ammo, letting you fight for longer! Choosing the Xeno'jiva Helm and Waist also grants you...
  • Special Ammo Boost - This increases the attack power of Wyvernblast, the mines you can set with circle (B). Wait 'til she falls down and mess up those horns.
  • Blight Resistance - The Xeno'jiva Waist also comes with two levels of Blight Resistance. Add one more jewel to your build, and you won't have to worry about catching on fire.
  • Partbreaker - Because breaking parts is important.

Note: We're recommending LBG over HBG because it's safer: The HBG cannot guard against Kulve Taroth's ranged attacks without additional skills, and is not mobile enough to reliably dodge. If you're a very skilled Heavy Bowgun user, go for it! You can provide massive damage.

Insect Glaive: The Insect Glaive offers reliable mount damage, plus horn damage. It's one of the few weapons that can reach the horns most of the time reliably.

advertisement

Gunlance: It's an exploding lance. You lose the dash and counters, but gain reliable damage (around 100 a hit!) with the charged shelling. You'll need some other skills besides the ones recommended for Lance to make the most of it though. Recommended Armor Skills for Gunlance:

  • Earplugs - This is an important skill for weapons that rely on charged attacks so you don't get interrupted. Taroth doesn't roar THAT much, but if you can swing it, get Earplugs.
  • Guard - Massively reduces stamina and recoil from guarding attacks. Get at least one level.
  • Uragaan's Protection - To guard against attacks otherwise un-guardable - like Kulve's range fire attacks. This is necessary.
  • Artillery - Enhances your shell damage.
  • Capacity Boost - Increases the Gunlance's shell capacity.
  • Focus - Increases the charge rate for weapons with charge attacks.
  • Protective Polish - The Gunlance's shelling attack kills sharpness like the Lance's dash, so this is still useful.
  • Partbreaker - To mess up those parts!
  • Handicraft / Speed Sharpening - If you don't have a Protective Polish jewel.

Consider Playing Support

The Sword and Shield doesn't have a ton of reach, but you can easily access items without having to sheathe your weapon. You can react quickly to when Kulve Taroth is beneath a bridge of boulders in Area 1, or beneath a pillar in Area 3. Get Wide Range and you'll be able to save teammates on the regular. Life Powder can work as well if you don't want to run the Armor Skill, it just won't be quite as helpful.

P.S.: The Wiggler Head is a great gear choice for support!

Area 1 Tips

  • Take advantage of the multiple wedge beetles to stick to the high ground and get around, and to mount.
  • Look for rock bridges to shoot down on top of Kulve Taroth. It'll do massive damage and leave a great opening for attacks. Consider holding onto Piercing Pods to do this, so you can shoot through the monster to the rocks above.
  • Have someone ready the canons so you can shoot when able. Nothing is more disappointing than missing an opportunity because they weren't loaded.
  • You can find said canons marked on your map!
  • Don't let the Gajalakas and endemic life scurry away with your loot. Pick stuff up ASAP.
  • Generally, Kulve Taroth is very passive in this area. Don't be too afraid.

Area 2 Tips

  • Kulve Taroth becomes more active in this area, and will attack you with enough force to kill.
  • Be wary of the lava she spits.
  • Kulve Taroth will roll toward you - don't be fooled, the range is stupid. Keep running / dodging away until you're certain she's done.
  • Use the wedge beetles here to mount.

Area 3 Tips

  • Drink a Cool Drink! There are Chillshrooms right by the entrance of this are, which should automatically craft into Cool Drinks.
  • Don't stand in the lava (duh).
  • Lure Kulve Taroth under pillars, and drop them on her with stones or a range weapon for massive damage and points.
  • You can also lure Kulve Taroth over eruptions of lava to get 300 ticks of damage each second she's over them!
  • Her lava attacks become incredibly brutal in this area. Her line attack can one-shot some if they're not health boosted. Her AOE "the floor is lava" (literally) attack is more insidious. If you're right next to her when she starts this and don't run immediately, you will probably die from the chunks of damage it deals before you can get out of the area.

Area 4 TIPS

By now, Kulve Taroth has been "released" and without the gold coating, she becomes surprisingly fast and agile. Be wary.

  • She can now pull a Diablos-like horn charge which does a decent amount of damage.
  • Kulve Taroth will spam lava attacks, and the ceiling will drip lava. Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Focus on the horns here, but if you want max rewards / points, this is your last change to break things you haven't.
  • The pillar in the middle can be used to run up and do aerial attacks. This is a great resource to do constant damage to her horns. Consider sticking a Health Booster (and even an Affinity Booster) here so your team can continue the onslaught.

Kulve Taroth Siege Rewards

Completing the Kulve Taroth Siege may reward you with rare relic weapons that require appraisal at the smithy in town. These will be randomly constructed - made of a piece of an existing weapon, plus a golden quality unique to Kulve Taroth - and have random stats. Of course, you can also make armor made of Kulve Taroth materials.

Special tickets may drop that can be redeemed for this special Palico Armor Set.

Completing the Kulve Taroth Siege will also unlock a new Delivery Quest that will unlock new Layered Armor, seen below. You'll need to trade in your Bushi tickets for these.
